How to watch the news from your home country while living abroad

Many broadcasters stream their news channels live on YouTube, and many of those streams can be watched anywhere. Some are limited to their own country. Here is what usually works from abroad, what doesn't, and why.

What usually works

News channels are the most likely to stream worldwide: their own 24/7 news streams, parliament and government channels, and international channels such as DW, France 24, Al Jazeera, CNA and TRT World. Browse what streams from each country on the live TV directory, for example Argentina, India, the Philippines, Kenya or the United Kingdom.

What usually doesn't

Entertainment, films, series and sports are sold country by country, so broadcasters often block them outside their home market, or don't stream them at all. Some news streams are limited too: BBC News streams 24/7 on YouTube only in the US, the UK and a few other countries.

When a stream is limited, YouTube shows that it isn't available in your country. That is the broadcaster's decision.

A word on VPNs

A VPN can make a stream think you are at home, but it usually goes against the terms of the streaming service, and services can block it. Skywall plays streams in YouTube's official player and respects each broadcaster's country limits; it doesn't unblock anything.

Follow home and the world together

In Skywall, put your home country's news next to the local and international channels where you live: browse by country, filter by language, and save the wall under a name, like “Home”. Your walls sync through iCloud between your iPhone and iPad.

Questions

Can I watch my country's TV channels live from abroad?

Often the news, yes: many broadcasters stream their news channels on YouTube for everyone. Entertainment and sports are usually limited to the home country.

Why does a stream say it isn't available in my country?

The broadcaster has limited it to certain countries, usually because of broadcast rights. Apps that use YouTube's official player can't change that.
