In browser windows
- Open each live stream in its own window, not in tabs: browsers slow down video in tabs and windows you can't see.
- Arrange the windows side by side (drag them, or use the window tiling in the Window menu).
- Mute every window except the one you want to hear: each window plays its own sound.
Safari: in Safari > Settings > Websites > Auto-Play you can allow the stream sites to play on their own, or stop only media with sound. Chrome always lets muted videos start, and its Memory Saver leaves tabs alone while they play audio or video.
How much bandwidth you need
YouTube recommends about 5 Mbps for each 1080p stream, 2.5 Mbps at 720p and 1.1 Mbps at 480p. Nine streams at 720p need around 22 Mbps; four at 1080p, about 20 Mbps. Close other streaming tabs and apps if a stream keeps buffering.
Websites that build the grid for you
multiview.world shows up to nine YouTube live streams on one page and starts with news channels; ViewGrid builds grids from YouTube, Twitch, Kick and Rumble links and has a news preset. Both are free. You find and paste the streams yourself, and sound is per tile.
With Skywall on the Mac
Skywall runs on Macs with Apple silicon or Intel. It plays up to nine broadcasters' official live streams in one window, keeps the sound on the one you choose, and remembers your walls.
- Keyboard shortcuts: the arrows pick a screen, Return gives it the sound, M mutes, F fills the wall, and 1 to 9 jump straight to a screen.
- Ready-made walls for world news, news in Spanish, business and markets, and big events.
- One purchase covers your iPhone and iPad too.
Questions
Can a Mac play several YouTube live streams at the same time?
Yes. Open each one in its own browser window, mute all but one, and make sure your connection can carry them: about 5 Mbps per stream at 1080p.
Why does a stream stop when its tab is in the background?
Browsers save power by slowing down or pausing video that isn't visible. Keep each stream in its own visible window.
